Skin Care Tips to Prevent Irritation from Incontinence Products
Incontinence products do their job well, but if skin care isn't part of the routine, irritation can become a real problem. The combination of moisture, friction, and prolonged contact with skin creates conditions where redness, rashes, and breakdown can develop quickly, especially in older adults or anyone with sensitive skin.
The good news: most skin irritation from incontinence products is preventable. Here's what actually helps.

Why irritation happens
The skin in the areas covered by incontinence products is exposed to moisture for extended periods, and moisture, over time, breaks down the skin's natural barrier. Once that barrier is compromised, friction from the product itself, along with bacteria and fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments, can cause irritation, rashes, and in more serious cases, skin breakdown or infection.
This is why skin care isn't optional, it's part of the routine.
Clean gently and completely at every change
The most important thing you can do is clean the skin thoroughly at every product change, without being harsh about it. Rubbing too aggressively damages the skin barrier further. The goal is to remove moisture and residue without adding friction.
Tranquility® Cleansing Wipes are a practical option for this, fragrance-free, gentle, and designed specifically for incontinence care. They clean effectively without requiring rinsing, which matters when changing on the go or when water access is limited.
For situations where a more thorough cleanse is needed, Cardinal Health™ No-Rinse Foam Cleanser (available in fragrance-free or scented) does the same job with more coverage, useful for bed changes or when the affected area is larger.
Apply a moisture barrier after every clean
Cleaning alone isn't enough. After every change, applying a moisture barrier cream or ointment creates a protective layer between the skin and the next product, reducing friction and blocking moisture from sitting directly against the skin.
A few options depending on the situation:
- Coloplast Baza® Protect Moisture Barrier Cream: a reliable everyday barrier cream, good for regular use as part of a consistent routine.
- Coloplast Critic-Aid® Moisture Barrier Ointment: slightly heavier, better for skin that's already showing early signs of irritation or redness.
- Coloplast Critic-Aid® Thick Moisture Barrier Skin Paste: the thickest option, best for more significant irritation or for overnight use when the product will be on for longer.
- A&D Plus Ointment or Zinc Oxide: classic, widely used barrier options that are effective and affordable for everyday protection.
- Cardinal Health™ Manuka Honey Skin Barrier Protectant Cream: a gentler option with natural antibacterial properties, good for sensitive skin.
Watch for signs of fungal irritation
If the skin appears red, raw, or develops a rash with defined edges (especially in skin folds) that may indicate a fungal issue rather than simple friction irritation. In that case, a regular moisture barrier isn't enough.
Coloplast Critic-Aid® Clear Moisture Antifungal Barrier and Coloplast Baza® Cream Antifungal Barrier both combine moisture protection with antifungal properties, addressing both the symptom and the underlying cause. Calmoseptine Ointment is another option worth knowing, it soothes irritated skin while also providing a protective barrier.
If irritation persists or worsens despite consistent skin care, it's worth consulting a doctor or dermatologist, as some cases require prescription treatment.
Change products regularly, don't wait until full
One of the most common causes of skin breakdown is leaving a product on too long. Even high-quality incontinence products with excellent moisture-wicking technology aren't designed for indefinite use. Changing at regular intervals, even if the product isn't completely saturated, keeps moisture exposure within a range the skin can handle.
This is especially important overnight. If nighttime skin irritation is a recurring issue, consider whether the current product is the right absorbency level for the duration of sleep.
Keep the routine consistent
Skin care works best as a routine, not a reaction. Cleaning and applying a barrier at every change, not just when irritation appears, is what prevents the problem from developing in the first place. Once skin breakdown occurs, recovery takes significantly longer than prevention.
